YouTube Changed Its Signature Red — Here's Why It Matters
In 2025, YouTube updated its branding, replacing its traditional bright red with a softer shade and adding a gradient that transitions from red to purple. It's the first major change to the platform's color palette since 2017.
Why Did YouTube Drop the Old Red?
At first glance the change may seem subtle, but there are real reasons behind it:
Screen burn-in. Bright red, especially on OLED TVs, could cause a permanent "burn-in" effect on the display panel.
Inconsistent rendering. On some devices the old red looked too aggressive or shifted toward orange.
Visual fatigue. Harsh colors strain the eyes, particularly during long viewing sessions.
What Has Actually Changed?
A cooler red. The new shade is softer and adapts better to different screens, creating a more comfortable viewing experience across devices.
A gradient transition to purple. Interface elements now shift color smoothly, adding visual dynamism. This is most noticeable in the video progress bar and certain buttons.
Updated brand identity. The new color palette is applied to the logo, the Subscribe and Like buttons, and the YouTube Premium icon.
The YouTube design team considered orange and yellow as accent colors before settling on purple — they felt it was the most natural complement to the updated red, producing a harmonious visual style.
What Does This Mean for Creators and Viewers?
For viewers, the refreshed interface is easier on the eyes, which can translate into longer watch sessions. For creators, the shift in YouTube's visual language means that thumbnails and channel art aligned with the new palette will feel more balanced and on-brand.
YouTube's redesign isn't just cosmetic — it's a deliberate step toward a more comfortable experience for everyone on the platform.
